Local Middle School Youth Meet with Howard County Councilmember Deb Jung
Ellicott City, MD — Jumada Than 3rd, 1446 ~ December 5, 2024
Islamic Leadership Institute of America (ILIA) is proud to announce a successful meeting held today between two of our youth project managers, Maryam and Rehmat, and Howard County Councilmember Deb Jung. Maryam and Rehmat, both middle school students and residents of Councilmember Jung’s district, engaged in a meaningful dialogue on topics impacting youth and the broader community.
During the meeting, Maryam shared the recently developed job description for the newly created role of Inspector General (IG) for Howard County. This role follows the legislation approving the IG position, which passed on Monday. The youth learned about the critical need for this role, including fostering accountability and transparency within county operations, and why now was the right time to establish it. They also discovered that Maryland currently has only three Inspector Generals across the state all of whom are women highlighting an inspiring trend of female leadership in governance.
Additionally, the youth shared key documents, including an overview of ILIA’s mission, programs, and contributions to the community, as well as a Hijab Training Guide aimed at fostering cultural understanding and inclusivity in public institutions.
This interaction reflects ILIA’s commitment to empowering youth as leaders and active participants in their communities. Maryam and Rehmat exemplified leadership in action by advocating for meaningful opportunities for Muslim youth in Howard County and broadening their understanding of civic engagement. We are grateful to Councilmember Deb Jung for her support and for creating a platform where youth voices are heard and valued.
